On Longing

The title of this piece is taken from Susan Stewart’s book, On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection.  I’m not usually a reader of academic work (too wordy!!) but the premise of this book really struck a chord with me.  She talks about souvenirs, nostalgia, the gigantic and the miniature.  Sometimes I feel a great sense of lost for the past and I miss those close to me who have died – it’s almost a physical pain. I put all of that emotion into this piece, filling it with photos of my family and treasures I have collected through out my life. There’s even a well worn handle of my dad’s rotavator that he would use to prepare the soil on his allotment.

Today On Longing resides in the CEOs office of a software firm in Farnham UK, taking his mind off the troubles of the day.

On Longing was exhibited in The Royal West Academy Sculpture show where it won the Theresa Knowles Travel Bursary prize.
